Weather report

Because Lake Tekapo’s weather can change quickly, especially in our alpine environment, we recommend checking the latest forecast as close to your tour departure time as possible.

Our Recommended Forecast

We partner with Canterbury Weather Updates (CWU) and use their Lake Tekapo forecast alongside other forecasting tools to monitor conditions for our stargazing experiences.

Once you’re on the page:

  1. Scroll down until you see the Tekapo Star Gazing banner.
  2. Click “View Stargazing Forecast”.
  3. This will open a detailed stargazing forecast covering the next three nights.
  4. You’ll be able to see predicted cloud cover, visibility, moonlight conditions, and the best viewing times for each night.

The stargazing forecast is designed specifically for night sky viewing and is the same forecast our team uses when discussing expected viewing conditions with guests.

Looking for More Detailed Forecast Data?

For guests who would like a more in-depth weather analysis, we also recommend viewing the Meteoblue Astronomy Forecast.

Meteoblue provides detailed information on cloud cover at different altitudes, atmospheric conditions, and other forecasting data used by astronomy enthusiasts around the world. While the forecast can be more technical to interpret, it can provide additional insight into expected viewing conditions.

A Note About Forecasts

Weather forecasts are predictions, not guarantees. Conditions in Lake Tekapo can change rapidly, particularly around sunset and during the evening. For the most accurate information, we recommend checking the forecast regularly in the hours leading up to your tour.

Will My Tour Still Go Ahead?

Yes. Tekapo Star Gazing tours operate in all weather conditions.

On clear nights, you’ll enjoy our outdoor astronomy experience with telescope viewing of the southern night sky.

On cloudy nights, we bring everyone indoors for our immersive Virtual Reality astronomy experience – a guided journey through the Tekapo night sky using stunning 360° imagery and expert storytelling that brings the constellations, galaxies and Māori star stories to life.

If you’re on our Soak in the Stars tour, your exclusive hot pool experience continues as normal regardless of the weather.
