Weather report
Because Lake Tekapo’s weather can change quickly, especially in our alpine environment, we recommend checking the latest forecast as close to your tour departure time as possible.
Our Recommended Forecast
We partner with Canterbury Weather Updates (CWU) and use their Lake Tekapo forecast alongside other forecasting tools to monitor conditions for our stargazing experiences.

Once you’re on the page:
- Scroll down until you see the Tekapo Star Gazing banner.
- Click “View Stargazing Forecast”.
- This will open a detailed stargazing forecast covering the next three nights.
- You’ll be able to see predicted cloud cover, visibility, moonlight conditions, and the best viewing times for each night.
The stargazing forecast is designed specifically for night sky viewing and is the same forecast our team uses when discussing expected viewing conditions with guests.
Looking for More Detailed Forecast Data?
For guests who would like a more in-depth weather analysis, we also recommend viewing the Meteoblue Astronomy Forecast.
Meteoblue provides detailed information on cloud cover at different altitudes, atmospheric conditions, and other forecasting data used by astronomy enthusiasts around the world. While the forecast can be more technical to interpret, it can provide additional insight into expected viewing conditions.
A Note About Forecasts
Weather forecasts are predictions, not guarantees. Conditions in Lake Tekapo can change rapidly, particularly around sunset and during the evening. For the most accurate information, we recommend checking the forecast regularly in the hours leading up to your tour.

Will My Tour Still Go Ahead?
Yes. Tekapo Star Gazing tours operate in all weather conditions.
When skies are clear, you’ll enjoy our outdoor astronomy experience with telescope viewing and stargazing from our exclusive hot pool.
If cloud cover or weather conditions prevent outdoor stargazing, we’ll instead take you on our immersive indoor Virtual Reality astronomy experience. This customised journey explores Lake Tekapo’s night sky using stunning artwork and storytelling that brings the constellations to life.
If you’re on our Soak in the Stars tour, your exclusive hot pool experience will continue as normal.
Get a partial refund on overcast nights
Your guide will update you on weather at the start of your tour and all endeavours will be made to have you out on the scopes for the full allocated period. If the weather results in you having less than 30 minutes on the scopes, then a 25% refund on the ticket price will be granted at the end of your tour (valid on tours from 18 June 2026). This will be processed on-site and where practicable on the card used to make your booking. The remainder of part one of your tour will be conducted using VR indoors, and if you’ve booked the Soak in the Stars tour, the second part of the tour outside in the pools will continue as normal with a guide poolside.
