Indoor Virtual Reality Stargazing Experience

Go beyond stargazing and step inside the southern night sky with our immersive and interactive Virtual Reality experience.

Indoor Virtual Reality (VR) Experience

Go beyond stargazing and step inside the southern night sky with our immersive and interactive Virtual Reality experience. Using stunning 360° imagery captured right here in Lake Tekapo, the talented team at Evans Taylor Digital has created a unique VR journey that takes you from iconic locations such as the summit of Mt John and the Church of the Good Shepherd out into the wider cosmos.

Guided by our astronomy experts, you’ll move among the stars, explore distant galaxies and nebulae, and discover the stories behind the southern sky. Unlike a telescope, which offers a glimpse of a single object at a time, this experience lets you look around the whole night sky, focus on different regions, and bring select objects closer for a detailed view. Combining breathtaking visuals, engaging storytelling, and interactive exploration, it reveals the beauty and scale of the universe in ways that aren’t possible through a telescope alone.

Some nights, the Mackenzie weather hides the stars from view, but your tour is still very much on. When that happens, we bring everyone indoors for a guided Virtual Reality (VR) journey, using real Tekapo night‑sky imagery to explore the same constellations, galaxies, and Māori star stories you would experience outside, just without the clouds. You’ll see the night sky from a different perspective – moving through constellations, galaxies, and nebulae, and uncovering the stories behind the stars through an immersive, guided experience.
